Game of Thrones is not only focusing on leaders, but also on the spiders in the shadows that weave the nets for or against them. While victories and defeats are always accompanied by the names of kings or officers, most of them have the most important characters hidden. Petyr Baelish a.k.a. Littlefinger is one such personality who manipulates historical events through knowledge and chaos. However, his move to gift Bran Stark with the very catspaw dagger that was meant to bring his death was actually an introduction to his most fierce enemy.
The Controversial Catspaw Dagger of Valyrian Steel Triggered the War of the Five Kings
‘The Spoils of War’ is the episode 4 in the penultimate season of Game of Thrones. The installment revealed a scene between Bran Stark and Littlefinger which resembled a game of chess. Pawns were moving, yet Bran managed to make the black king tremble under his mask.
Littlefinger offered the catspaw dagger made of Valyrian steel. This soulless tool seemed to be charged with great powers as it appeared several times throughout the story. The blade received the dreadful mission to kill the Stark child in Season 1.
Littlefinger mentioned furthermore that the dagger had triggered another crucial chain of events. Because of it, Catelyn Stark took Tyrion as a hostage and enhanced the hatred between the Starks and the Lannisters. This conflict might as well have started the War of the Five Kings.
While Littlefinger was trying to get in the good graces of Bran, the boy is no longer the curious, adventurous, and innocent son of Ned Stark. He is now the Three-Eyed Raven and stands in silence for the most part. But when Littlefinger says the trigger word ‘chaos’ Bran speaks up: ‘Chaos is a ladder.’ These are the same words Littlefinger whispered to Varys in the chamber of the throne in season 3.
Littlefinger Is a Master of Chaos
The two men of the shadows shared an intimate moment when they revealed their true intentions. While Varys works for the sake of the realm and common people, Littlefinger’s sole interest is for himself. He confessed that he works with the chaos that most people as too great a challenge to overcome. However, Littlefinger is a master of chaos, and he climbs on it to higher social positions.
By reiterating the same words Littlefinger used to describe his strategy of survival, Bran manages to inflict awe and terror in Baelish. Later in the episode, the catspaw dagger enters the possession of Arya Stark. Littlefinger is witnessing how skillful Arya is in wielding it in her duel with Brienne. He now needs to weave another net to protect himself against the blade with a bad omen on it.
