Cuba is in the middle of an investigation that is meant to clarify some U.S. allegations. The process started from two U.S. diplomats in Cuba. Both of them experienced unspecified hearing issues at the same time while they were at the U.S. Embassy in Havana. After this event, two Cuban officials received demands to leave their U.S. positions as the government speculates an acoustic attack.
U.S. Government Suspects an Acoustic Attack after Two Ambassadors Returned Home for Medical Reasons
On Wednesday, the foreign ministry in Cuba announced the opening of an investigation based on American allegations. The official stated that his country would never allow diplomatic agents or their families to suffer any attack within its territory. Therefore, the country accepted to cooperate with the United States to help solve the mystery.
The case took place in late 2016. Two ambassadors who were working on Cuban soil asked permission to return to America. Their explanation stipulated medical reasons which did not put their lives in jeopardy. In February, the embassy informed Cuban officials on the case. U.S. State Department spokeswoman, Heather Nauert, stated that it is still unclear what caused the medical conditions in the two officials.
“We don’t have any definitive answers about the source or the cause of what we consider to be incidents.”
As the United States suspected an acoustic attack on their citizens, on May 23 authorities asked two Cuban officials to leave America. They complied with these requests, yet their country saw this move as unjustified.
The Two Countries Resumed Their Diplomatic Relations for Only Two Years
An anonymous governmental official for the United States claimed that there had been numerous other such cases over the past six months. Different other embassy colleagues returned from Cuba due to hearing issues. Some of them turned up to be in need of hearing aids.
The two countries have just managed to reestablish diplomatic relations two year ago after around five decades of enmity due to the Cold War. As a consequence, they agreed on opening embassies in capital cities and resume political collaboration. President Donald Trump may have shown intentions to overturn this policy of Obama, yet many changes continue to unfold in an amicable direction.
