The Controversial Link Between Diets Rich in Fish and Reduced Depression Rates

While eating fish has been shown to have a significant effect on reducing depression, the controversial link between diets rich in fish and reduced depression rates remains insufficiently backed by scientific evidence.

According to a massive meta-analysis conducted by Chinese researchers, that was published in Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health, there is some strong evidence that including larger quantities of fish in people’s diets might lead to reduced chances of developing depression. However, more research on the matter is needed in order to reach a concise standpoint.

The meta-analysis included a total of 26 scientific articles, conducted during 2001 and 2014. After a close observation of the methods employed in these studies and their findings, the researchers concluded that men who have diets rich in fish have a 20% lower risk of developing depression, while women have a 16% reduced risk.

“Future studies are needed to further investigate whether this association varies according to the type of fish.”, concluded Professor Dongfeng Zhang, of the Qingdao University’s Medial College.

There are many factors that contribute to the development of depression; and while the nature of a person’s diet could have great weight on the person’s chances of acquiring the condition, it cannot prevent depression on its own.

The complete method of steering clear of depression remains far wider than making some dietary changes. However, alongside other positive lifestyle choices, such as increasing regular exercise and relaxation activities, it truly has the potential to keep people safe and happy.

The healthy fatty acids that fish is particularly rich in seem to have the acclaimed positive effect on the mental state of the person. However, the Chinese researchers pointed out that there are only European studies that are backing the link between diets rich in fish and reduced depression rate.

This is why further research will have to focus on the exact types of fish included that are included in the diet, because specific fish preferences vary significantly all over the world.

It remains to be seen when scientists will discover the exact type of fish that can make people less prone to depression. But until then, as Professor Zhang himself mentioned, included more high quality fish in a person’s diet is still something worth trying, as it has a series of beneficial effects on the overall state of a person’s health.
